Winning entry, $500 Award
Launching a kid into college is second only to labor and delivery for intensity of effort and ultimate reward—grunts and screams notwithstanding. Without a doubt, financing college is a daunting prospect for double-income families. As a single mom, my search for financial assistance had all the frantic focus of someone looking for a ground-level window in a burning building. Fortunately, hurdle Number One was an easy jump. Katie landed tuition waivers from all three state universities, which is particularly amazing when you consider how dramatically my genes watered down her father's IQ. The wild side of DNA can be a wondrous thing.
Katie's choice was the University of Arizona, located about 90 miles south of our front door. One glance at the price of a dorm room made me realize that hurdle Number Two would be a real challenge. Tuition waivers are nothing more than enticements to reserve a space the size of a shoebox in a building so pricey that it should be renamed The Trump Towers. Wouldn't you know, Katie turned up her nose at the idea of pitching a tent in a nearby park. She was actually indignant, as if I was suggesting that option for all four years. Kids are so spoiled these days.
The dynamic combination of my daughter's initiative fueled by my own seasoned nagging turned up glimmers of hope. We stumbled across excellent resources like Get Free Cash for College: Scholarship Secrets of Harvard Students and tips from the Internet. The University Financial Aid Department and Katie's high-school counselor tossed us a few crumbs of information. Friends and relatives forwarded odd scholarship applications including one from Tylenol. As poetic as that seemed, something sponsored by Prozac or Valium might have been even more appropriate from my viewpoint.
The true depth of my financial anxiety surfaced as Katie and I poured over an application for a scholarship offered by my health insurance company. Geared toward young adults with an entrepreneurial spirit, the application called for a five-year business plan in addition to the grind of essays, transcripts, activities, and letters of recommendation. Katie asked me to look over the fiscal data on her business plan, including estimates of capital outlay. When I grabbed my throat and asked for a paper bag to breathe into, my daughter rolled back her eyes and announced flatly, "You really need therapy, mom."
She was absolutely right. Unfortunately, mom's therapy will be hurdle Number Six. We still have Three, Four, and Five to master before Katie is on route to capturing her sheepskin. One baby step at a time, we make our way. Instead of sighing with relief at the prospect of having enough money to cover one semester's dorm expense, the mantra that floats through my mind sounds more like, "Just 24 months, and I'll be going through this again with Elizabeth."
